Turkey

Turkey is a large country with parts of its territory in Europe and parts in Asia. It is an agricultural country that is generally self sufficient in food. It has great variations in climate from subtropical coastal areas to alpine areas on high altitudes. The country is in strong and fast development and negotiating for membership in the European Union. The population growth is likely to make it the largest country in EU at the time of a membership.

The dairy sector is also going through a fast change. Today more than 50% of the produced milk is assumed to be delivered to the formal processing industry. The other part, slightly less than half, is sold informally, consumed on the farm or fed to the calves. This development has to continue to qualify Turkey for accession and to make the industry competitive inside EU.

For above reasons the sustainability is mainly a matter of profitability, which puts emphasis on productivity and quality.

Turkey today produces a little less milk than the Netherlands with three times more cows.
