Dairy Campus - The Silicon valley of the dairy industry?
A center for innovation, education and research will be built in Leeuwarden in the Netherlands. The Dairy Campus will offer livestock farmers, agricultural educational institutions, agricultural scientists and entrepreneurs from the sector a base from which to work together on innovations and solutions for dairy farming.
The dairy farming sector is facing economic challenges, and the demands for sustainable production, animal welfare and food safety are increasing. In order to prepare the dairy farming sector for these challenges, the Wageningen UR Livestock Research, Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences, the Provincial Government of Fryslân and the Municipal Council of Leeuwarden have joined forces and founded Dairy Campus.
The campus will host companies, colleges and research institutions, making it possible to work closely together, like a Silicon Valley for the dairy sector. Companies looking for innovation and research can turn to the research institutes or colleges, and research can quickly be applied in practice and also integrated into the education. Students will also have training opportunities to develop their skills, and new innovations can be tried out commercially.
