Our research focuses on determining management strategies for late gestation and early postpartum dairy cows that will minimize the incidence of periparturient metabolic disorders and maximize postpartum milk production. We recently completed a study that demonstrated that by enhancing ruminal carbohydrate availability prepartum, health and performance of the transition cow was improved. Our current studies are aimed at increasing the availability of glucose precursors during the transition period, improving the efficiency of dietary energy utilization and decreasing development of fatty liver and ketosis. The research program incorporates basic and applied concepts to provide a mechanistic understanding of factors affecting the needs of the transition cow while providing information that can be used directly by the dairy producer. An interdisciplinary team of investigators is involved providing a diverse background of strengths to enhance the outcome of scientific findings.
