Planned activities for World SCHOOL Milk Day - 24 September 2008:
Austria:
As the World School Milk Day is approaching us quickly, we are very proud to announce that the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management is organizing a School Milk Conference "Kuh-le Schule - frisch gestärkt mit Schulmilch" (Coo(w)l School - freshly strengthend by School Milk) on October 2, 2008 in Vienna. The Conference is being organized together with the Austrian Agrarmarkt Service, AMA Marketing, the Austrian Community of Interests in School Milk, the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, the Arts and Culture and the Austrian Federal Ministry for Health, Familiy and Youth. The aim of the conference is to inform teachers, kindergarten teachers, headmasters and school caretakers, but also mayors, who are responsible for the schools in austria, about the importance of school milk for the health of the children but also about in which ways the school milk can find its way into the school and can be distributed in the schools.
Canada:
Dairy Farmers of Canada are organizing the poster contest once again this year. This is a national contest almost all provinces of Canada are participating except Quebec and New Brunswick. For the first time ever, the Ontario dairy industry has invited all Ontario elementary schools to participate in World School Milk Day (WSMD) by offering complimentary milk to over 1.4 million elementary students in 4,000 schools across Ontario! The goal is to highlight the importance of milk in the diets of growing children here in Ontario and also globally. Two big events, one in Toronto and the other in Ottawa are planned to celebrate WSMD and Ontario's successful Elementary School Milk Program currently in 71% of schools. Media and various levels of government will be invited to attend. In addition, a teachers guide of curriculum based activities, WSMD info brochure, parent information brochure on the Elementary School Milk Program and posters are all being sent to schools to enhance their celebrations. As per past years, all elementary students in schools with a school milk program are eligible to participate in a Canada-wide poster contest. This year's winning poster is featured prominently in WSMD materials. 2008 contest winner was Melanie Juneau Gr. 5 student, St. Mary's Catholic School, Gloucester, Ontario The following website has been developed to explain more about WSMD and what is happening in Ontario: www.milk.org/worldschoolmilk
Croatia:
In Croatia, elementary school students will celebrate World School Milk Day by creating original posters that show their appreciation for milk. Also, articles on School Milk will be send to newspapers and magazines to publicise the benefits of school milk programmes. Like Year before, children will be togather in the main square and will present their work celebrating milk with pictures and songs. Croatian dairies will give milk and dairy products. Also, dairy animals will be presenten on the main square.
A dairy meal has finally found its place in elementary schools in Croatia. Especially in Zagreb, where kids get a glass of free milk each day. On initiative of Croatian Dairy Union every year we celebrate The World Milk Day and particulary The World School Milk Day. We are pleased that we have succeeded in making a milk and other healthy products more interesting and closer to the general public, specially young people. Croatian Dairy Union has also started publishing a magazine ˝Milk and Me˝. It is the first and only magazine in Croatia that will educate people on milk and dairy products in every day life. This year we will organize a 38th Croatian Experts Symposium, where scientists and experts can show the latest achievements in milk and dairy industry.
Denmark:
In Denmark we also plan to celebrate World School Milk Day 2008. On the 24th of September we (the Danish Dairy Board) will launch a new on pack campaign. We will use 20 celebrities as campaign spokesmen. Players from Danish National soccer team, sportspeople who participated in the Olympics and other sportspeople with appeal to schoolchildren will be used on pack and at a campaign website. Focus are milk, nutrition and physical activity. All the schools in Denmark are invited to join the campaign by competing in a quiz at the website on knowledge about milk, nutrition and physical activity.
Finland:
In Finland we celebrate World School Milk Day with following activities:
- for younger students in comprehensive schools: posters and work booklets about milk are free to order as well as some material to fresh up the school canteen
- for 13 to 19 year old pupils we have opened a web game on campaign pages www.otamaidostamallia.fi. It is also possible to choose a voice that wakes you up in your mobile phone there.
- a leaflet about milk and two posters about milk and breakfast for home economic teachers
- a media release about what kind of milks are served at schools: over 50 per cent of the milk served at schools is fat free.
In every Finnish comprehensive and high school there is milk served daily together with a warm lunch for free for the students. Usually there are at least two types of milk available for everybody: fat free and low-fat milk (1% or 1.5 % fat). For lactose-intolerants there is also low-lactose or lactose-free milk. Besides milk, students have a possibility to choose buttermilk. Milk and butter milk served at schools is pasteurized, but not flavored. Fresh milk tastes best when served cold and that’s why many schools already have a cooling serving system for the milk.
Germany:
Preparing World School MILK Day Tetra Pak Germany initiated a successful milk moustache contest. Because of the timing of such a contest and the school holidays we started already in June. The price ceremonies in the winning schools will be in September. (Press release) Best Milk Moustache Contest
Tetra Pak is committed to promoting milk in German schools.
A recent survey of the German Robert Koch Institute shows that less than half of German children and young people meet the daily intake recommendations for milk and dairy products. Schools are also now buying less milk. Milk consumption in schools and kindergartens has declined by two-thirds since 1993. Tetra Pak Germany wants to stop this trend and encourage children to drink milk again. That's why the company initiated a contest for German primary schools in conjunction with World School Milk Day 2008.
The world's leading food processing and packaging solutions company invited children at a total of 18,000 schools to take part in a photo contest. The judges were looking for the "best milk moustache" on photos of the children on their own or with their teacher. The children and schools sending in the best photos were able to look forward to attractive prizes. Winners were able to choose between an excursion with friends to a theme park, a pair of trendy Heelys or a Wii game console. The schools with the top three entries in the Teacher & Pupil photo category won EUR 3,000, 2,000 and 1,000 respectively.
The jury, Susanne Schlicher, school milk manager Tetra Pak Germany, Dr. Annette Nagel from the School Food Board and Sabine Habicht from the German Osteoporosis Self-Help Association faced a difficult choice. They had to choose the best photos from a total of around 900 entries. "It was no easy task. We were surprised and delighted to see how creative the children had been," said Susanne Schlicher. First prize in the Teacher & Pupil category went to Gjyljeta Krusnik from the Martinsschule school in Sindelfingen and Jan Erik Wolfram from Jößnitz took first prize in the Individual Photo category. A special prize of EUR 1,000 was awarded to Eggesin primary school for its imaginative "milk-drinking school" collage.
"We're convinced that we've improved the image of school milk through out contest. Some of the milk moustaches will have whet the children's appetites for the healthy, energising drink and, hopefully, they'll encourage their friends to drink it too," said Susanne Schlicher, summing up.
Tetra Pak has continued to promote milk in schools after World School Milk Day. Twelve years ago, it teamed up with some of its partner dairies to launch a school drinks programme called Joe Clever. The "clever milk cat" encourages children to drink milk. Joe Clever was also the patron of the photo contest. The milk slurping cat is featured on the photo contest poster, where he explains the rules and entry procedure.

Right now we work closely with TP customers to set agendas and scenarios.
