Compost barn basics

Readers have asked about compost bedding, and we have made a summary of the research at the University of Minnesota.

Well-managed compost barns can provide excellent cow comfort. The experience of Minnesota dairy producers with compost barns has been very positive to date. From their experience it is apparent that when the composting bedded-pack is managed well, the cows are clean, comfortable, have fewer lameness problems, and lower SCC.

Compost barns require proper design, location, and exceptional management to provide a well-ventilated, dry place for cows to lie down. Read the whole summary on compost bedding>>

Manure management
Livestock waste contains many microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. While some are pathogens capable of causing disease in animals and/or humans, many are not harmful. All livestock producers have an important role in limiting pathogen movement from their operation to the environment.
The purpose of this article is to provide livestock producers with tools to help control pathogens in their production system.>>
Feeding behaviour of cows

Promoting dry matter intake (DMI) to support milk production is a cornerstone of successful dairying. A majority of research investigates how changes in feed nutrient composition impacts DMI of lactating dairy cows.

However, DMI of group-housed lactating dairy cows is also affected by feeding behavior, which is modulated by the environment, management, health, and social interactions.

Farmers can use knowledge of dairy cow feeding behavior to improve DMI, cow health, welfare and performance, and farm profitability.
